A fire beside the railway tracks has led to major problems for train passengers, with additional hold-ups and service suspensions anticipated throughout the evening.

All trains running in both directions along the line linking Cardiff Central and Newport have been halted, with the situation not expected to resolve before midnight on Wednesday, August 5.

A representative from Transport for Wales stated that an incident involving a fire alongside the track in the Marshfield vicinity, situated between Cardiff Central and Newport, had occurred. The number of trains able to operate has been reduced, and travellers should brace for residual waiting times of approximately one hour. The company expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

Diversionary arrangements have been put in place to assist commuters in reaching their intended destinations.

Passengers may travel on Great Western Railway trains serving the route from Swansea to Cardiff Central and the line running from Cardiff Central to Cheltenham Spa via Bristol, in either direction.

CrossCountry trains travelling between Cardiff Central and Cheltenham Spa are also being accepted.

Commuters whose journeys began from an alternative station due to the incident may use their current tickets to return to their original starting point without paying additional fares.

However, authorities have cautioned that bus replacement options are limited in availability and are urging travellers to defer non-essential trips.

Several Stagecoach South Wales bus services are currently honouring rail tickets, comprising the X24 route from Newport to Pontypool via Cwmbran, the 21 and X3 services between Pontypool and Cwmbran, and the 23 line running from Cwmbran to Hereford via Abergavenny.

The X3 is additionally operating between Cardiff, Pontypool, and Cwmbran, while service 11 runs between Cwmbran and Pontypool.

Cardiff Bus is accepting rail tickets on its 30 route connecting Cardiff and Newport.

Newport Bus is accepting tickets on the X30 service between Newport and Cardiff.

Trains between Newport and Gloucester have also been suspended in both directions following the fire beside the tracks close to Marshfield.

Travellers have been informed that local bus services will operate to enable them to complete their journeys without extra charges.

This encompasses Route 73 and X74 operated by Newport Bus between Newport and Chepstow.

Newport Bus Route 72 between Chepstow and Lydney will similarly be available while train services remain affected.
