City-centre businesses in Newport are being invited to a follow-up meeting with police and council officials over continuing concerns about crime and anti-social behaviour.

Newport Now Business Improvement District has organised the session with Newport Business Against Crime. It is due to take place at the Mercure Newport on Upper Dock Street from 4pm to 6pm on Wednesday, September 30.

The meeting follows a gathering on June 17 at which more than 100 businesses raised concerns with Gwent Police, Newport City Council and other agencies. Newport Now BID manager Kevin Ward said commitments had been made at that session and the organisations had promised to reconvene after the summer holiday period.

Five traders then reported separate incidents within one August week. Coffee at 26, Quarters Coffee and The Coffee Shop were among those affected, alongside Beam Sports & Schoolwear and Xclusive Jewellers. Beam put the likely repair bill at about £6,000. After repeated break-ins, Xclusive Jewellers said its city-centre premises would close following almost four decades of trading.

Gwent Police said Operation Krypton had led to more than 160 arrests and remained focused on crime and anti-social behaviour. The council said it had invested £350,000 in city-centre safety measures, including improved CCTV.

The BID represents more than 600 members. Its street ambassadors work in the city centre five days a week and night ambassadors operate at weekends. Businesses have been asked to confirm attendance by 5pm on Wednesday, September 23.
