Newport East residents asked for views in 12-week fireworks consultation

Published on

Newport East residents have been invited to give their views during a 12-week government consultation on fireworks and pyrotechnics.

The UK Labour Government launched the consultation, which closes on Wednesday, October 7. It is being run by the Department for Business and Trade with the Office for Product Safety and Standards.

Officials are seeking responses from members of the public, businesses, councils and animal welfare organisations. The exercise is part of the government’s Safer Streets Mission and will consider how traditional celebrations can be balanced with public safety.

Newport East MP Jessica Morden asked people in her constituency to take part. Complaints about the misuse of fireworks in Newport have increased over time, and residents have called for existing rules to be reviewed.

Mrs Morden said she had heard from veterans, older residents and people concerned about animal welfare. She said most of the people who contacted her wanted tighter controls on anti-social firework use. She also asked residents whether fireworks should be limited to organised displays.

The government said fireworks remain an important part of public celebrations, community events and personal milestones, and that millions of people use them responsibly. It also acknowledged concerns about noise, safety and the distress fireworks can cause.

Previous government work has included annual public-awareness campaigns about considerate firework use. Guidance for community display organisers was published in October 2025, while retailers and trade associations joined a round-table discussion in July 2025.
