The Welsh leader has called on shops across the country to halt sales of single-use grills as he collaborated with Andy Burnham to address the growing wildfire crisis.

Rhun ap Iorwerth expressed his support for Andy Burnham’s demand that every retailer, regardless of size, adhere to voluntary recommendations and cease sales when temperatures soar dangerously.

The Senedd member raised the matter during an urgent Cobra committee meeting convened by the UK government on Wednesday.

Several retailers have already withdrawn the products from shelves under arrangements struck between fire services and the British Retail Consortium in 2023.

The guidelines stipulate that outlets should halt sales when a heatwave is forecasted, or when councils make reasonable, evidence-supported requests.

Burnham informed journalists that the portable grills had contributed to multiple recent fires and stated that people should avoid using them right now.

He indicated that ministers would explore introducing a nationwide prohibition during summer months going forward.

Ap Iorwerth stated on Radio Wales Breakfast that he fully backed actions capable of eliminating this hazard as much as feasible. He observed that combining open flames with parched landscapes presents considerable danger.

He emphasised his support for risk-reduction measures while acknowledging that imposing an outright ban falls outside devolved powers.

Andy Burnham has articulated his position clearly. All parties bear responsibility. Every possible step must be taken. If removing some or all of these grills from circulation substantially reduces danger, everyone should be keen to pursue that course of action.
