The Swedish flat-pack furniture giant is set to introduce a pre-owned trading platform for British customers.

The digital marketplace will enable members of the retailer’s loyalty programme to purchase and sell second-hand IKEA goods directly between themselves within their communities.

The service will restrict listings to IKEA-manufactured items only, excluding products from rival brands.

A company representative explained that the initiative forms part of IKEA’s commitment to enhancing domestic life and connecting shoppers with desirable products.

The spokesperson noted that the marketplace represents a significant move towards establishing a hub that facilitates access to previously owned IKEA furnishings.

The objective is to ensure that transferring cherished IKEA pieces becomes as straightforward as possible for users.

The company aims to build a reliable and active environment where IKEA Family members can conduct direct exchanges with minimal friction.

The intention is for the entire process of acquiring and selling pre-owned goods to be uncomplicated, inclusive and worthwhile.

The UK rollout follows trial programmes conducted in Madrid and Oslo, which commenced in August 2024.

During the testing phase, vendors could submit pictures of their furnishings before the platform generated existing product imagery, measurements, assembly guidance and recommended pricing.

Participants in the pilot regions were also given the option of receiving payment in cash or an IKEA gift card valued at 15 percent above the agreed sale amount.

Purchasers and sellers subsequently coordinated the logistics of local collection and delivery themselves.

The initiative garnered positive feedback, resulting in permanent implementation across Spain and Norway, before expanding to Portugal and Poland throughout 2025, Sweden from January 2026, and Belgium in April.

The company observed that shoppers in participating nations demonstrated particular demand for second-hand bedroom pieces, storage solutions and seating options.

The marketplace will function independently from IKEA’s established Buyback programme, which enables consumers to offload qualifying items directly to the company in exchange for store credit.

During the retailer’s 2025 fiscal year, approximately 686,500 pre-owned articles were recovered through the Buyback scheme, marking a 39 percent rise compared to the preceding twelve months.

Goods reclaimed via Buyback subsequently become available for resale within IKEA’s dedicated second-hand sections.
