The German discount retailer has identified 39 potential sites across South Wales for additional outlets, with Newport, Ebbw Vale, and Penarth among the areas under consideration.

The company currently operates more than 1,000 branches throughout Britain.

Earlier in 2024, the retailer announced intentions to grow its network through 19 fresh openings and renovations at 70 existing locations, which would generate 640 employment opportunities.

The retailer continues seeking premium sites nationwide to establish further outlets and sustain its rapid expansion.

The company has pinpointed numerous locations across the country where it hopes to develop new stores, with this catalogue containing 39 options in South Wales encompassing relocations.

Store specifications outlined by the company include:

A minimum retail floor area of 18,000 square feet (1,672 square metres), a plot extending to at least 1.5 acres, on-site vehicle parking for a minimum of 100 cars at ground level, a trade area population exceeding 20,000 residents with at least 5,000 in the primary settlement, and properties available on freehold, leasehold, or long leasehold terms. Locations must occupy prominent, highly visible positions.

Competing retailers have similarly disclosed expansion ambitions for the region.

Marks and Spencer disclosed targeting 500 sites across Britain for new food outlets, with 14 of these situated in South Wales including Abergavenny, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Monmouth, and Penarth.

Aldi announced plans to create 280 positions across its Welsh branches while proposing a new store in Newport scheduled for 2026 or 2027. The retailer also intends to modernise and enlarge its outlet at Glamorgan Vale Retail Park in Llantrisant the same year as part of a £300 million investment programme.

Tesco confirmed it will launch a new Express outlet in Pontrhydyrun within Torfaen over the coming twelve months.
