Malpas Cricket Club has obtained financial support to enhance its green initiatives both on the pitch and in the wider community.

The club was selected as one of this year’s winners of the Sustainability in Sport Fund, a programme operated jointly by the Welsh Sports Association and Admiral.

The selection followed a rigorous process that saw 25 submissions received, with eight candidates subsequently presenting their proposals at Admiral’s offices in Cardiff.

Andrew Howard, who leads the Welsh Sports Association, offered his congratulations to this year’s award winners, noting the increasing dedication within Welsh sport to environmental stewardship and the capacity of clubs such as Malpas Cricket Club to inspire positive transformation in their localities.

The Malpas initiative focuses on an innovative water conservation strategy that leverages sensor technology to harvest and recycle rainfall, targeting an impressive annual water saving of 150,000 litres.

By capturing precipitation, the approach diminishes reliance on treated water supplies while simultaneously nurturing soil quality and local ecosystems.

The scheme incorporates educational components such as community workshops, informative displays, and outreach to nearby schools and neighbourhood groups.

Malpas Cricket Club intends to collaborate with surrounding entities, companies and sporting authorities to broaden the project’s influence and promote environmental consciousness.

The Sustainability in Sport Fund operates under Admiral’s broader Green Fund Initiative, which itself forms part of the company’s Community Investment Programme.

A total allocation of up to £100,000 has been committed to enable sporting groups to conceive and implement forward-thinking environmental schemes.

Additional beneficiaries comprised Cardiff City FC Community Foundation and Triathlon Cymru.
