A retail outlet in Gwent has been added to the Government’s register of tax offenders.

HM Revenue & Customs has released information about companies and people who received financial penalties for not meeting their tax responsibilities or intentionally submitting incorrect tax filings.

One of those named is Abercarn Store Ltd, a convenience store located on High Street in Abercarn, Caerphilly.

The company did not provide a complete disclosure when HMRC commenced its inquiry.

The Premier outlet failed to pay £246,546 in tax during the period spanning 1 October 2020 to 30 September and 1 January 2023 to 30 June 2024.

A penalty of £155,323.98 has been imposed on them.

The information will remain publicly available for one year.

Kevin Hubbard, HMRC’s Director of Individuals and Small Business Compliance, stated that the department is working to address tax non-compliance among UK high street businesses, and the publication of these names demonstrates that enforcement action will be taken wherever such practices are discovered. He noted that all individuals on the list were given the chance to come forward and provide a full disclosure but chose not to do so, and that HMRC will continue to pursue those who deliberately avoid paying what they owe.
