Initiatives focused on environmental improvement are progressing throughout Wales thanks to a dedicated sports sustainability programme.
The Welsh Sports Association, with support from Admiral’s Green Fund Initiative, is backing new ventures through the Sustainability in Sport Fund to encourage greener practices within the Welsh sport and leisure sector.
Three WSA members have received grants for their proposals, while two additional members have obtained partial funding.
Michelle Leavesley, chief sustainability officer at Admiral, stated that this year’s participants have proven truly inspiring, with their commitment to serving their communities combined with their environmental goals demonstrating the significant positive transformation achievable when individuals collaborate with shared objectives.
The Sustainability in Sport Fund provides up to £100,000 in initial funding to assist WSA members in developing and implementing projects that encourage environmental action and cooperation.
Three organisations were chosen from a list of eight candidates following presentations held at Admiral’s Cardiff offices on March 23.
Those who secured funding were Malpas Cricket Club, the Cardiff City FC Community Foundation, and Triathlon Cymru.
Malpas Cricket Club’s successful proposal centres on collecting rainwater and implementing sustainable methods for maintaining pitches.
The system will gather rainfall for application on cricket grounds, supporting water conservation and minimising ecological footprint.
The Cardiff City FC Community Foundation’s initiative will collaborate with 900 Year 6 students from 30 primary schools to create an environmentally conscious Stadium of the Future.
This programme, backed by Willis Construction and delivered through Minecraft, will explore carbon reduction, renewable energy, and sustainable construction methods.
Swim Wales and Triathlon Cymru’s Safer Blue Spaces Wales initiative will enhance safety monitoring of waterways for athletes using lakes, reservoirs, and coastal areas.
By employing passive samplers to detect exposure to viral, bacterial, and chemical hazards, the project seeks to develop a risk rating framework to better safeguard athletes.
Andrew Howard, chief executive of the WSA, remarked that delivering the Sustainability in Sport Fund alongside Admiral for a second consecutive year has been particularly meaningful and tremendously exciting.
