A travel firm operating from Monmouthshire has secured a prestigious industry accolade for its exceptional tour offerings.

Peter Sommer Travels, located in Monmouth, picked up the honour at the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) Awards, which were held during the organisation’s 50th anniversary celebrations.

The family-owned enterprise focuses on specialist-led, small-party cultural excursions and gulet sailing holidays, and was awarded the Platinum prize—a brand new classification representing the top level of recognition.

Peter Sommer, who established the company, expressed that the entire workforce was thrilled to earn this distinction from AITO, particularly given the milestone anniversary year. He noted that the team has always strived to deliver expertly curated, intimate group experiences that surpass expectations and bring meaningful enrichment to travellers’ lives.

This honour adds to the company’s prior accomplishments, comprising four Silver and four Gold AITO Tour Operator of the Year distinctions.

Peter Sommer Travels was set up in 2002 by Mr Sommer, who works as an archaeologist and previously produced television documentaries. His passion for exploration was ignited in 1994 when he completed a 2,000-mile trek across Turkey, retracing Alexander the Great’s historic path. The business is preparing to commemorate its quarter-century milestone in 2027.
