Treasury outlines strategy for sustainable economic growth

The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants’ Welsh division has unveiled proposals aimed at driving economic expansion while maintaining environmental responsibility.

ACCA Cymru/Wales is urging every political party to embrace four central objectives that it maintains would guarantee Wales’ future economic success.

The demands arrive prior to the Senedd ballot scheduled for May 7, 2026 and feature in ACCA’s recently released election policy document.

According to Lloyd Powell, who leads ACCA Cymru/Wales, accountancy constitutes a fundamental profession supporting society, playing an essential role in helping economies, businesses and individuals flourish.

He explained that within Wales, financial experts occupy central positions across the economy, public services and the journey toward carbon neutrality.

These professionals facilitate expansion, security and creative development throughout all industries.

The organisation expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Senedd and Welsh Government to achieve the goals detailed in their policy document, ensuring Wales possesses the necessary talent, institutions and financial expertise to prosper.

The demands are unambiguous, Powell stated.

He emphasised that the proposals transcend partisan politics, focusing instead on tangible measures capable of assisting enterprises, public finances and enduring economic wellbeing.

ACCA Cymru/Wales’ four central objectives comprise:

– Establishing an excellent skills and career development framework.

– Fostering circumstances conducive to environmentally sustainable business expansion.

– Enhancing public finances, workplace efficiency and tax predictability.

– Accomplishing a pragmatic and equitable shift toward carbon neutrality.

The body is advocating for increased higher-level apprenticeship opportunities, faster delivery of brief training programmes and deeper business involvement in skills strategy, particularly regarding digital and green capabilities.

It also highlights the importance of spending on physical infrastructure, connectivity and enterprise assistance, alongside improved cooperation between government and major industries.

Regarding public finances, ACCA Cymru/Wales recommends multi-annual spending plans, a less complex tax framework and modifications to business rates to enhance productivity and predictability.

To assist with achieving net zero targets, the organisation suggests focused aid for smaller enterprises and stricter climate disclosure requirements for public institutions.

ACCA Cymru/Wales speaks for more than 6,400 professionals and trainees based in Wales, operating across every sector of the economy.
