A man in his sixties is taking part in a banger driving event to collect money for charitable purposes.
Two competitors from Caerphilly – Marshal Wilson, aged 61, and co-driver Shadritk, aged 43 – are taking part in the British Bangers rally, travelling in a donated 51-plate Ford Mondeo to Benidorm in support of Breast Cancer Now and charities focused on men’s mental health.
Mr Wilson was raised in a children’s home and hadn’t managed to give back to society, so when the Bangers to Benidorm opportunity arose, they discussed it but weren’t certain how to move forward.
Both his sister and his neighbour suffer from breast cancer, so he saw this as a constructive chance to make a contribution by raising money for Breast Cancer UK.
He has gone through tough times himself and knows others who have, which inspired him to also raise funds for men’s mental health.
His grandchildren are always in his thoughts – he has 12 grandchildren, as well as one great-grandchild. His children mean everything to him.
Growing up in the care system gives a unique outlook on life.
The duo began their preparations around eight weeks prior, aiming to gather £6,000 to be shared equally between the two charitable causes.
The car needed five days to decorate and was given to them free of charge. Regarding the Shaun the Sheep design, they are representing Wales – they are the 23rd Welsh team.
They will camp throughout the trip and sleep in the car for the whole rally.
A kind donor has also supplied them with Pot Noodles to sustain them during the five-day journey.
While the exact route is decided by event organisers, Mr Wilson and his companion are ready to alternate driving responsibilities for the long southerly journey.
What does Mr Wilson hope to gain from the trip?
He hopes to gain lots of experience, new friendships, and to raise significant sums for the charities to give something back to the community.
If the car is still running at the end, they will drive it home and raffle it to generate extra donations, though they will have to wait and see if a Ford Mondeo can actually reach Benidorm. It is a 51-plate vehicle that was headed for the scrapyard.
