Pair held as police continue narcotics investigation after alleged deal

A 44-year-old individual and a 23-year-old individual have been taken into custody as part of an active drugs inquiry.

The detentions came after authorities believe they witnessed a drug transaction close to Somerton Bridge in Newport at approximately 10:30 on the morning of Wednesday 8 July, which police say involved the older man.

The younger man was additionally held during the inquiry.

According to a Gwent Police representative, officers received word that an unidentified individual was engaged in what is believed to have been a drug transaction in the vicinity of Somerton Bridge.

Officers assigned to Operation Krypton from the Newport local policing unit attended and conducted a stop and search on a man fitting the description on Somerton Road.

They subsequently searched a property in Somerton where they found what is believed to be heroin.

Both individuals reside in Newport.

The 44-year-old has been detained on suspicion of involvement in heroin distribution and possession of a class A controlled substance.

The 23-year-old has been detained on suspicion of possessing proceeds of crime.
