Health alert issued amid heatwave for asthma patients

Warmer weather could create problems for those affected by varicose veins.

A vein expert based at Premier Veins in Cardiff has cautioned that prolonged hot spells may exacerbate conditions, as elevated temperatures can cause blood vessels to widen.

This results in heightened pressure within the lower extremities and manifestations including puffiness, sensations of heaviness, and throbbing.

Huw Davies, a specialist vascular surgeon working at Premier Veins, explained that while Britons enjoy sunny conditions, the heat can also generate difficulties for numerous individuals.

Thermal conditions directly impact how blood moves through the lower body.

When the thermometer climbs, blood vessels enlarge, which can impede the smooth passage of blood from the feet and legs back toward the heart.

For individuals whose veins are already compromised, this can dramatically amplify existing complaints.

He noted that many individuals first become aware of difficulties when experiencing warm conditions, frequently describing their limbs as feeling more sluggish, bloated, and uneasy.

Mr Davies observed that it occurs frequently for patients to attend appointments following a period of milder weather mentioning they suddenly became conscious of throbbing, constriction, or visible vessels they had previously overlooked.

Although this frequently responds well to treatment, it may indicate a developing issue that could slowly advance if left unaddressed.

The clinic advises straightforward precautions such as maintaining movement, refraining from extended periods on feet or seated, raising the legs during rest periods, and ensuring adequate fluid consumption.

Mr Davies contributes extensive practical expertise and investigation to his practice, possessing specialised education in minimally invasive vessel procedures.

These interventions encompass radiofrequency ablation, ultrasound-assisted foam sclerotherapy, and microsclerotherapy.
