A technology company based in Wales has received an Emmy nomination for its contributions to broadcasting innovation.
POVORA, headquartered in Chepstow and previously trading as JockeyCam, was acknowledged for its compact wireless CapCam device, which officials wore during ESPN’s American college football coverage.
The nomination falls under the George Wensel Technical Achievement category at the 47th Annual Sports Emmy Awards.
Sam Fleet, co-founder and chief executive of POVORA, expressed that being nominated for a Sports Emmy was both thrilling and a fitting acknowledgment of the dedication shown by the team domestically and internationally.
The project centred on one fundamental concept: providing audiences with unprecedented proximity to the sporting action.
Since 2020, POVORA has led the way in sports camera technology, initially creating helmet-mounted devices for jockeys that offered viewers an immersive perspective from the saddle.
The company has subsequently broadened its reach to additional sports such as Speedway and Six Nations Rugby, where it introduced a live RefCam for broadcasters in 2024.
The Emmy-nominated CapCam, brought to fruition with backing from ESPN, made its first appearance in 2025.
Engineered for referees, the system accommodates all elements—including a camera, transmitter, and battery—within a conventional cap, with a total weight of just 18oz (510g).
Image stabilisation represents a defining characteristic of the CapCam.
Sam Challenger, technical director at POVORA, noted that a referee’s stance alters constantly throughout a match and achieving a steady horizon under those circumstances had previously proven impossible.
The CapCam emerged through collaboration with House of Drones AG, a company based in Switzerland.
ESPN also served a vital function as innovation partners, steering the technical development to guarantee the equipment functioned effectively during live broadcasts.
The Sports Emmy Awards ceremony is scheduled to be held in New York City on May 26.
