Welsh town named one of Britain’s top affordable days out

A new study has highlighted an affordable option in Britain for a day trip.

Newport ranked fourth out of 28 UK towns and cities, behind Southend-on-Sea, Kingston upon Hull, and Stoke-on-Trent.

The research, carried out by credit card firm Aqua, examined spending on meals, drinks, transport, cinema tickets, and car parking, alongside the availability of free family-friendly activities and attractions.

Newport came second in Britain for budget dining out, with a typical meal at an inexpensive restaurant costing £14.00 per person.

Cinema admission prices in the city also featured among the five most affordable, averaging £7.75.

Scott Yule, commercial strategy director at Aqua, said small decisions can influence the total cost of a day out. Visiting during less busy periods, choosing buses or trains when possible, and locating free activities all help with budgeting. While some British cities may offer more economical options, affordability depends as much on planning and individual choices as it does on geographic location. Each person’s financial situation differs, so it is about finding what works for you and organising ahead so you can enjoy the outing without worrying about costs.

Southend-on-Sea took the crown as the most affordable destination overall, aided by cinema tickets at just £6, inexpensive travel choices, and 60 complimentary attractions.

Kingston upon Hull, sharing the title for cheapest cinema admissions with Southend, was also recognised for reasonably priced coffee.

Stoke-on-Trent, placing third, distinguished itself with affordable parking facilities and the greatest concentration of indoor play centres.

Bradford completed the top five, boasting low parking charges and almost 60 free attractions.
