Welsh airport one of UK’s best for on-time flights, beating larger hubs

Cardiff Airport is outperforming several of the nation’s busiest aviation hubs when it comes to on-time performance.

Research conducted by Locals Insider reveals the facility logged fewer delayed departures during April than prominent UK terminals such as Edinburgh and Heathrow.

Using figures published by the Civil Aviation Authority spanning April 2022 through April 2025, the review examined in excess of 650,000 journeys originating from 24 British airfields.

Cardiff Airport documented a 23.8 per cent delay percentage across 1,918 flights during the four-year window, whereas Edinburgh recorded 27.2 per cent, Heathrow 26.4 per cent, and Gatwick 26 per cent.

Newcastle at 25.8 per cent and Bristol at 27 per cent similarly posted worse figures than the Welsh hub.

Martin Danemaq, representing Locals Insider, indicated that Cardiff Wales Airport demonstrated favourable outcomes in their assessment.

He noted that services arrived on schedule more frequently than at Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh and numerous other significant British airports, presenting a reassuring picture for passengers travelling from Wales, particularly as the airport demonstrates continued expansion.

He observed that with record passenger volumes over the Easter period and several promising new destinations forthcoming, Cardiff is enjoying a successful year.

He suggested that their figures demonstrate the airport is maintaining competitiveness on punctuality against facilities managing considerably higher traffic volumes, which is encouraging as it proceeds with its growth trajectory.

Airports recording the highest proportion of tardiness included Birmingham, where 29.9 per cent of services ran behind schedule, Manchester at 29.8 per cent, and London Stansted at 29.7 per cent.

Additional airports with elevated delay figures comprised Luton at 29.7 per cent, Edinburgh at 27.2 per cent, and Bristol at 27 per cent.

Those with the most favourable on-time records encompassed Belfast City at 17.6 per cent, East Midlands at 17.8 per cent, and London City at 18.4 per cent.
