Police detain two after disturbance in residential neighbourhood

Residents of a Barry community are coping with the aftermath of an incident that led to two teenagers being taken into custody on the evening of April 13.

South Wales Police announced that officers detained an 18-year-old male and a 17-year-old youth following the occurrence, which happened on Park Road at roughly half past ten in the evening.

Both were arrested in the Roath district of Cardiff at approximately eleven o’clock that night. Investigators seized a car connected to the case, and forensic teams gathered various items from the scene for examination.

On Tuesday, a police perimeter continued to be in place along Park Road as officers urged local residents and drivers to avoid the zone and take alternative routes, with entry prohibited between Porth-Y-Castell and Porthkerry Park.

Neighbours living nearby spoke of a substantial police presence throughout the day as officers maintained the barrier and forensic examination proceeded, while some mentioned being escorted by police and asked to show identification when arriving at or leaving their homes.

A 50-year-old man living on Cambridge Street who arrived at the location had just viewed his CCTV recordings to determine whether they might help investigators.

He advised that nothing was discernible on the footage, though it picked up several loud bangs at around 10:30 p.m., which he likened to the sound of firearms being discharged.

Only a few people were about apart from occasional dog walkers and those turning back when unable to proceed, including a delivery driver working for Asda.

Several residents questioned expressed confusion about what had transpired, with one person walking their dog saying they had no idea what was going on despite living just a hundred yards away.

A police cordon extends between Oxford Street and Park Road in Barry.

A witness named Hayley, who is 47, recounted the previous night’s events.

She explained that she had been sleeping at around 10:30 p.m. when she heard two sounds resembling gunshots.

She told her partner it sounded like a shooting but he said that could not have been the case.

Hayley continued that an officer knocked on her door in the early morning to ask if they had heard anything, so she allowed her inside and related what they knew.

She noted that it was alarming to hear what sounded like shooting outside one’s home and with more news about firearms and knives circulating, it made people very anxious about what was occurring.

Another dog walker, aged 72, shared this feeling of discomfort.

She remarked that it was uncomfortably near to where she lived but there had apparently been considerable trouble in the Porthkelly area.

A statement from South Wales Police indicated that two males were arrested following an incident on Park Road in Barry at around 10:30 p.m. on the previous Monday.

There were accounts that an individual had been attacked. However, no victim has stepped forward or been found.

Inquiries have been conducted at local hospitals and additional investigation continues. An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested in connection with the matter and remain in detention.

Enquiries are proceeding to determine the precise details of what occurred.
