A youth library is poised for a major revamp following fresh financial support.

Newport Library is set to benefit from a portion of £5.28 million allocated by the Welsh Government to enhance cultural accessibility, upgrade infrastructure and safeguard collections across 31 initiatives involving museums, libraries and archives throughout Wales.

The financial package will go toward redesigning the young people’s library area, ensuring it is more approachable and interactive for children and their families.

Heledd Fychan, the cabinet member responsible for culture and sport, stated that these venues serve as community anchors across Wales, providing spaces where individuals engage with heritage and traditions, where young readers develop enthusiasm for books, and where senior citizens exchange experiences. She noted these should remain inclusive environments for all. The investment would deliver meaningful improvements by preserving essential collections, broadening participation and guaranteeing these cultural venues remain relevant for coming generations. She expressed enthusiasm about Newport Library’s inclusion among the supported initiatives and learning directly about the planned children’s library changes.

The capital derives from cultural funding programmes accessible to organisations regardless of scale, encompassing charitable and independent entities, with individual awards reaching as high as £500,000.
