Welsh competitors taking part in the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow have been sent messages of support by the First Minister.

Rhun ap Iorwerth, together with culture and sport cabinet minister Heledd Fychan, extended their wishes to the squad as they compete across ten different disciplines.

The First Minister stated that the Commonwealth Games provides an excellent platform for the nation’s top sportspeople to display Wales’ finest athletic abilities on the world stage. He noted that everyone taking part has already accomplished a great deal, and that people throughout Wales would be offering their encouragement. He wished them all success.

Ms Fychan commented that Team Wales fulfils a significant purpose both within the sporting world and in raising Wales’ standing internationally. She highlighted that sport constitutes an essential element of what it means to be Welsh, while also delivering substantial advantages for wellbeing and the economy.

For the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Welsh Government’s Cymru Wales branding has joined forces with Team Wales and will appear on competitors’ clothing.

This marks the inaugural appearance of the branding on competitors’ clothing.

The collaboration will place the Cymru Wales emblem on the sleeve of podium attire throughout the Games, alongside an extensive schedule of shared initiatives intended to promote Wales to an international audience.
