A memorial trek is scheduled for the upcoming May Bank Holiday weekend.

The gathering will follow the original Chartist trail stretching from Blackwood to Newport, almost two centuries on from when demonstrators originally marched demanding democratic representation.

The Open Party is behind the Chartist Walk, set for Saturday 2 May and Sunday 3 May. The journey begins at the Blackwood Chartist Mural and concludes at Newport’s Chartist Monument.

According to an Open Party representative, the Chartist movement campaigned for genuine democratic rights, which aligns precisely with what the Open Party represents today – returning genuine authority to everyday citizens.

The route is split into segments lasting one hour each.

The first day spans from Blackwood to Crosskeys, with the second day picking up from Crosskeys and heading to Newport.

Those taking part can choose to accompany the party’s candidates, voice their worries regarding Newport and Islwyn, or simply join discussions at planned stopping points.
