Ystrad Mynach has been named the victors at the Primary School World Cup competition.

Over 120 young people representing 12 different schools gathered for the occasion, enjoying the camaraderie and enthusiasm of international football.

Every school was linked to a particular nation, with pupils asked to cheer for their assigned country and wear outfits in its national colours to establish a World Cup mood throughout the event.

Following a day of football played under sunny skies, Cwm Gwyddon, partnered with Argentina, met St Helen’s in the opening semi-final encounter, while Ystrad Mynach, representing Brazil, competed against Hendredenny in the second.

Both Cwm Gwyddon and Ystrad Mynach advanced to the championship match, where Ystrad Mynach emerged triumphant as the overall champions.

Machen Primary School, the institution representing Curaçao, was additionally honoured with recognition for outstanding depiction of their assigned nation.

Councillor Chris Morgan, who serves as Caerphilly County Borough Council’s cabinet member responsible for sport and leisure, expressed that witnessing so many young people thoroughly enjoying football, representing various countries and embracing the World Cup atmosphere was wonderful. He noted that such occasions assist children in remaining physically engaged, developing self-assurance and partaking in sporting activities alongside their peers.

The gathering aligns with the council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy spanning 2019 to 2029, which seeks to motivate additional residents to adopt energetic and wholesome ways of living.
