A premier running event is marking its 40th anniversary in the current year.

The Kidney Wales CDF 10K, first staged in 1986, will hold its milestone edition on Sunday 6 September in Cardiff.

Planners have expanded the occasion to welcome participants, with upwards of 9,500 athletes set to compete in both the 10K and 2K categories.

Ross Evans, chief executive at Kidney Wales, said that acting as headline partner for the CDF 10K’s 40th anniversary represented an exceptionally meaningful occasion for the organisation. He noted that this achievement extends beyond this year’s competitors to include all those who have taken part since 1986 and everyone who has supported Kidney Wales over the years.

Competitors will follow a scenic route through Cardiff, passing famous landmarks such as Cardiff Castle, Principality Stadium, Pontcanna, Llandaff and Pontcanna Fields, and Sophia Gardens before crossing the finish line at the Edwardian Civic Centre.

Runners will receive special anniversary keepsakes, while organisers have arranged an 1980s-themed celebration alongside a display showcasing the event’s history and distinguished athletes.

Matt Newman, chief executive of Run 4 Wales, said that achieving four decades was an extraordinary milestone, and the year would be dedicated to commemorating this occasion.

Standard entry costs £34, or £5 for those pledging to collect £125 for Kidney Wales.
