Paramedics from the South Western Ambulance Service attended a collision on the M48 Severn Bridge on Monday afternoon, resulting in the complete closure of both lanes on the carriageway.
The incident was reported at around 2pm on 27 April. Drivers faced delays of half an hour or more, particularly those travelling in the direction of Chepstow.
Ambulance crews reached the scene where one person needed to be taken to hospital for care.
The AA’s traffic monitoring indicated that the M48 Severn Bridge was blocked in the westbound direction between junction 1 at Aust and junction 2 at Chepstow after a vehicle collision. Emergency services were working at the scene, with roads in the area suffering from half-hour delays.
It later became known that the casualty had been conveyed to a Bristol hospital.
Severe queuing was recorded on the M48 Severn Bridge after the collision left one person needing hospital admission.
The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed it sent extra units to the crash location.
An SWASFT spokesperson indicated that the trust was alerted at 14:26 on Monday 27 April about a road traffic event in the vicinity of Chepstow. A double-staffed emergency vehicle and a specialist hazardous area response team were despatched to the scene, and one person was conveyed by ambulance to Southmead Hospital.
Highway authorities also supplied information about what happened.
A statement from that source indicated that word of a road traffic collision came through at approximately 2:15 in the afternoon on the westbound side between junctions 1 and 2. The second lane was closed because of the incident, which scattered wreckage across the road surface and damaged the central safety barrier. The involved vehicle was removed and the road was cleared by 3:45pm.
