A historic inn dating back generations has reclaimed its status as a beloved local destination following the arrival of a new proprietor with deep roots in the establishment.

The Five Alls, a longstanding fixture on Hocker Hill Street in Chepstow, was taken on by Steve Hurrell, who had consumed his inaugural drink there at age 18, in June 2025.

Mr Hurrell has called operating the venue a lifelong ambition.

The establishment, which holds Grade II listed status and originated in the 1800s, resumed trading earlier this year after a closure exceeding two months.

Upon commencing his tenure in June 2025, Mr Hurrell stated that he had long cherished both the pub and its location, and was now able to manage it according to his own vision. He noted that his first proper pint occurred there when he turned 18. Shortly afterwards, he secured employment serving drinks behind the bar. From that moment, the notion of eventually running an establishment of this kind remained in his thoughts, and now that aspiration has materialised.

The Five Alls occupies a prominent position within Chepstow’s central area.

Its Georgian architecture, plastered exterior and characteristic bay windows feature in its official heritage documentation.

The venue’s appellation, first documented in 1847, references the Five Alls sign displaying five figures beneath statements including: I fight for all, I pray for all, I rule all, I plead for all, and I pay for all.

CAMRA’s Gwent division has acknowledged the change in leadership but has not provided additional information since Mr Hurrell assumed control.

The organisation characterises the Five Alls as an establishment of distinctive personality, drawing attention to its notable sign above the doorway and much of its unaltered original configuration.

Traditionally, the pub has been recognised for hosting rock music evenings, live performances, caskconditioned beers and rotating ales.

Current trading times are stated as Monday from 6pm to 11pm, Tuesday through Thursday from midday to 11pm, Friday and Saturday from midday to midnight, and Sunday from midday to 9pm.

Prior to the reopening, Red Oak Taverns had announced it was carrying out refurbishment work at the Five Alls Inn and was searching for a suitable operator.

The venue had remained shut since March.

Mr Hurrell has indicated that further enhancements remain on the agenda, encompassing a new catering facility and an outdoor drinking area equipped with a barbecue, both scheduled for completion in 2026.

He also disclosed his personal preferences, mentioning that he favours Hobgoblin ale and, when selecting cocktails, opts for an Old Fashioned.

The Five Alls has maintained its involvement in Chepstow’s musical entertainment sector, with performances already lined up for 2026.

Patron responses since the reopening have been favourable.

Simon Jones, in comments to the South Wales Argus, observed that he had not visited for several years and that the venue still possessed that authentic pub atmosphere and character. He stressed the value of backing such establishments, suggesting that efforts to preserve pubs of this nature are essential.
