Messages of condolence have been flooding in after the passing of Richard Rowe, who had been a rugby union player, educator and community volunteer from Ystrad Mynach in Caerphilly county, who died at the age of 47.

Throughout his sporting life, he represented Deri Minis, Penallta, Fleur-de-Lys and Oakdale in Blackwood.

The well-liked individual lost his life last week.

His reputation extended throughout the regional sports world and further afield thanks to his work in education, writing and philanthropy.

As well as his exploits on the pitch, Mr Rowe taught English at Coleg Gwent and additionally coached pupils as a freelance academic mentor.

In 2007, he released an alphabetical guide to Welsh rugby, using anecdotes from changing rooms and tour bus journeys to provide a humorous take on the sport reminiscent of his favourite film Grand Slam.

On Facebook, Andrew Thomas Titch expressed being absolutely devastated to learn that Richard Rowe had tragically passed away. He recalled some incredibly tough matches against him on the field, and then after moving to Ystrad Mynach, having numerous conversations about life. He described Richard as one of the decent ones and wished him rest in peace.

Richard also gave his time to charitable work, assisting the Helping Caring Team in supporting vulnerable and homeless people throughout South East Wales.

On their Facebook page, the charity remembered Richard, describing him as witty, bright, caring and mischievous, and noting he possessed boundless compassion for all.

His former club, Penallta, shared a brief social media tribute to their former scrum-half. The tribute noted Richard Rowe as a Penallta Legend born in 1979 and passing in 2026.

Companion Phil Morris remarked that he was thinking of a close friend that day. He noted that everyone understands that at some point life presents challenges, but not this early, not when there remains so much ability and promise yet to be fulfilled. He described Richard as a truly remarkable individual, and stated that learning of his death had left a scar many of them would bear until their own time came.

As well as his book on Welsh rugby, Richard’s literary talents extended to other areas, including dramatic writing.

Blackwood Little Theatre posted on social media that they were profoundly saddened to hear of the death of actor and playwright Richard Rowe. The theatre noted that Richard contributed significantly over the years and garnered multiple accolades for his excellent one-act play, The Tobacco Tin. They stated he possessed genuine writing talent, and they frequently discussed his upcoming work and his ambition to stage another of his theatrical pieces. They expressed that it will forever be a source of regret for Blackwood Little Theatre that they were unable to realise that ambition before Richard’s death. They described it as an opportunity squandered, one they shall always lament. Blackwood Little Theatre stated Richard will be remembered fondly by everyone who knew him, and thanked him for everything he contributed to their theatre and to amateur dramatics worldwide.
