Mother says rider showed no pity after tot hit in Newport

Police are appealing for witnesses after a toddler suffered a broken leg when a cyclist struck her on a busy road in Newport.

Gwent Police were alerted on Monday, April 27, that a child had been injured the previous day and needed hospital care following a collision with a bicycle rider on Clarence Place.

Enquiries are underway, including review of CCTV footage, and officers are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them by dialling 101 and quoting reference 2600129890, or via direct messaging on social media.

The child’s mother posted on Facebook that her daughter had only just left a shop on Clarence Place when a man cycling around the corner at speed knocked her down, causing the two-year-old to sustain a fractured leg and damage to a growth plate.

She said her daughter, who turns three in a fortnight, needed surgery in the early morning to treat the injury, calling the experience deeply distressing.

In her social media post, the mother said the cyclist showed no regret when stopped, claiming he did not ask about the child’s condition before cycling away.

She urged drivers travelling along Chepstow Road, Maindee, Corporation Road, or entering the city centre around 3pm or shortly afterwards who may have captured video of a man on a black bicycle wearing a green jacket and earbuds to share it with police, quoting reference GWP-20260427-0323.

Despite her injuries and operation, the mother said her daughter was recovering well, describing her as brave and resilient who was taking charge during her hospital stay.

Police have encouraged anyone with information or dashcam or CCTV footage from the area at that time to help with their enquiries.
