Steve Tilston brings acclaimed folk act to Newport on UK tour

Published on

A veteran folk musician will appear live in Newport as part of his nationwide tour.

Steve Tilston, who has spent over five decades as a performer and composer, will deliver a concert in Newport on May 14.

The engagement forms part of his current UK tour and will include material from throughout his career, alongside pieces from his latest and concluding studio release, Last Call.

Hailing from Liverpool, brought up in the English Midlands, and presently residing in Yorkshire, Tilston has built a reputation for his considered songwriting, original arrangements, and skilled guitar playing.

His compositional style merges folk, blues, jazz, and classical elements, and audiences have come to appreciate tracks such as The Slipjigs and Reels, Here’s to Tom Paine, and the BBC Radio 2 Folk Award-winning piece The Reckoning.

Steve Tilston’s cultural impact reaches further than the music industry. He served as the catalyst for the Hollywood production Danny Collins, which featured Al Pacino. The movie drew inspiration from correspondence Tilston had apparently mislaid, including a letter he received from John Lennon.

He has also made television appearances on Later with Jools Holland and BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle.

Tilston commands considerable respect among his peers, with fellow artist Ralph McTell commendatory of his output.

According to McTell, when evaluators examine the contributions of their generation of songwriters to their era, Tilston’s creations will stand alongside those of far more famous performers.

Various performers have covered his compositions, among them Fairport Convention, Dolores Keane, and Peter Bellamy.

His most recent recording, Last Call, came out on Talking Elephant Records.
