A Welsh football official is embarking on his 63rd year on the pitch.
Ken Wright, who is 78, has officially been confirmed as the longest-serving referee globally, having overseen more than 5,000 matches since 1964.
The Guinness Book of Records has formally acknowledged Mr Wright’s accomplishment, and he continues to be a regular presence in the Swansea Senior Leagues.
He expressed that considering the number of nations worldwide and the total number of referees working within the profession, he simply cannot comprehend that it has now become fact that he holds the record as the longest-serving official globally. He noted that it is genuinely something one cannot quite accept as true. He added that holding the position of longest-serving referee in Wales would represent a tremendous honour, with Europe being an even greater achievement, but when speaking of the entire globe, it feels quite extraordinary.
He pursued refereeing after being informed he would never succeed as a player and initially registered with the West Wales Football Association in 1964.
Throughout his career, Mr Wright has officiated matches at several of the most famous football venues in the country, including Highbury, White Hart Lane, and Stamford Bridge.
He has additionally taken charge of Swansea City fixtures against both European and domestic heavyweights Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United.

He stated that the experience ranked among the finest evenings of his professional life. There were 28,000 spectators present at the Vetch Field, and as someone from the local area running the line in front of the North Bank, many people in attendance were familiar with him. He admitted that he did encounter some criticism that evening.
Viv Nedin, vice-chairman of the Swansea Referee Society, described it as remarkable and a wonderful accomplishment for the nation. He noted that many referees have been officiating for 15 or 20 years, which felt like an entire lifetime to them. He observed that spanning more than six decades represents something quite extraordinary, and he believes Wales should take great pride in Ken Wright.
Barrie Williams, manager of Morriston Sports and Social, remarked that he is truly extraordinary, and when attempting to get some of the club’s younger members to match the fitness levels required within his team, they simply cannot keep pace with Ken. He mentioned that Ken has stated his intention to continue refereeing for as long as his physical condition allows, so he offers him tremendous respect. He noted that throughout local football circles, Ken commands considerable admiration.
