A car struck a bridge on May 1, causing damage that led to a road being shut in both directions.

Chapel Lane in Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran has been impassable since yesterday morning and is expected to remain closed for several weeks.

A lorry became stuck on the crossing over the Afon Llwyd river, with Torfaen County Council confirming that the impact damaged both the wall and the bridge structure.

A spokesperson for Torfaen County Council said on Friday that Chapel Lane in Croesyceiliog is closed to traffic following a lorry’s collision with the bridge earlier that day. The incident occurred that morning, causing damage to the wall and bridge structure. The driver sustained no injuries. The footbridge continues to remain open and access will be preserved for local residents and workers in the area.

Gwent Police initially posted on social media warning the public about the incident and advising people to avoid the area.

Gwent Police reported that Chapel Lane in Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran is presently closed in both directions at the bridge over Afon Llwyd. Diversions are operating which may lead to traffic buildup. The public was advised to refrain from traveling through this area if possible and utilize alternate routes for their trip.

According to Torfaen County Council, the lorry driver was not hurt.

While the main road stays closed to motorised traffic, the footbridge remains accessible and passage will be maintained for local residents and those working in the area.

No exact date has been set for Chapel Lane to reopen, although the council has said it would be shut for a number of weeks.

The route had only just reopened after maintenance work carried out by Welsh Water.

An alternative route from Edlogan Way to Afon Terrace, Station Road and Avondale Road will be available.
