Over twenty years of fundraising through the John Murray Golf Day has seen more than £100,000 collected for good causes.
The gathering, which took place on July 10 at Llanwern Golf Club, was established to commemorate John Murray, an enthusiastic all-round sportsman and footballer who passed away at age 36 after battling malignant melanoma.
Mark Phillips, a family friend who serves as resident golf professional at The Park Golf Club, arranges the yearly occasion.
Its popularity has been such that it has continued annually since its inception, having previously taken place at Tredegar Park before moving to Llanwern, where many of John’s loved ones and acquaintances hold memberships.
All funds generated by the day are directed to SCARF, a skin cancer research initiative, with more than £100,000 having been accumulated throughout its history.
Barclays has in recent years matched every pound generated at the event.
More than 200 participants join in, with many having backed the occasion since its very beginning.
A group of relatives and companions handles the organisation, while nearby companies provide backing through sponsorships and raffle prize contributions.
The sold-out day is typically succeeded by an evening of entertainment featuring music and dancing.
An event representative stated that July 10 marked the 22nd staging of the John Murray Golf Day at Llanwern Golf Club. A dedicated team of relatives and companions invest considerable time ensuring the day’s smooth operation, with over 200 participants set to attend this year.
