Pontypool Community Council has approved sponsorship for the Torfaen Community and Volunteer Awards 2026.

The resolution was passed during a hybrid council gathering on April 22.

The £800 sponsorship fee will be drawn from the marketing budget.

The prize-giving event is scheduled for October 16 at the Parkway Hotel in Cwmbran.

Council members present included A Peploe, L Clarkson, J Cox, L Hunt, G James, J James, L Jones, N Jones, S Lang, J Martin, R Matthews, R Overton, S Senior, and N Warren.

Staff members C Drew and K Smith also attended.

Apologies were tendered by councillors N Byrne, A Gunter, and C Price.

The council additionally approved a £200 allocation from its general grants fund for the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

The presiding officer confirmed that all requests for community voluntary funding had undergone review and verification by the financial manager.

The council also examined the staff support programme report.

Councillor L Hunt expressed the view that elected members ought not to access this scheme since they are not council employees.

Councillor S Senior indicated they believed the scheme was unnecessary given the authority had functioned adequately without such provisions previously.

However, Councillor L Hunt pointed out that the authority is duty-bound to offer occupational health evaluations to its workforce.

The clerk advised the gathering that the financial returns justify the expenditure and that attendance figures remain a significant issue.

The aim is to bring down current absence rates.

The proposal received endorsement following a ballot.

The council also acknowledged the scheduled date for the One Voice Wales National Conference and Awards on July 1.

Councillor G James and the clerk will represent the authority at this event.

The council further considered the overview of committee framework restructuring.

Councillor N Warren advised that One Voice Wales would be conducting an assessment of the committee structure at the conclusion of April.

Representatives were invited to submit any proposals or feedback regarding desired changes, such as committee reorganisation, modifications to committee authorities, or transferring responsibilities to officers, via email to the clerk.

The council also took note of the closing date for submitting preference forms for the yearly gathering scheduled May 13.

The clerk mentioned that some problems had been encountered when trying to access the form online, and physical versions could be provided if required.

Councillor N Jones asked for a printed copy and inquired whether the form could be forwarded to Councillor Senior.
