Published on

Newport locals and guests can look forward to an varied programme this weekend, featuring everything from high-energy disco bingo to serene animal blessings.

The Phyllis Maud Performance Space will host Folk At The Maud IV, bringing together regional folk artists, verse makers and artistic individuals. The gathering aims to provide an evening described as ‘a considerate and open environment.’ Visitors should be aware the performance is largely standing-room only, with limited seating at the front. The occasion takes place on May 2 starting at 5pm.

Pitbull Disco Bingo awaits at Newport Market, combining three rapid rounds of bingo with a glittering disco atmosphere. Friends are welcome to join in, with attendees encouraged to don bald caps and sequins for the evening. The venue enforces an over-18s age restriction, while extra sustenance and drinks can be bought on site. The fun starts on May 2 at 8pm.

Becki Biggins takes to the stage at the Drill Hall in Chepstow for a live performance. The celebrated vocalist and saxophone player will perform her own material, described as ‘classic songwriting with heartfelt storytelling.’ Reviewers have remarked ‘Becki’s warmth and wit draw you in.’ The show begins on May 2 at 7.30pm.

Those preferring a calmer option might consider the Pet Blessing at Penterry Church. The outdoor field ceremony welcomes creatures of all sizes, from tiny hamsters right up to full-grown horses. Zoe Pimentel, who is described as ‘Vicar and dog lover,’ conducts the service. Visitors should layer up warmly and bring along their furry, feathered or hooved companions. The blessing takes place on May 3 at 11.30am.

Llantarnam Grange presents Sgwrs Hanes | History Talk, guided by director Louise Jones-Williams. Visitors will discover the site’s story and its links to the former monastery. The free talk coincides with Gallery 2’s current historical display. The presentation runs on May 2 at 12.30pm.

Further information is available through the respective venue websites.
