A school in Penarth has secured the Independent School of the Year title at the Edufuturist Awards 2026.
Westbourne School received the accolade for its groundbreaking methods in readying pupils for a future shaped by artificial intelligence, with commendation for rebuilding education from its foundations.
The Edufuturist Awards, which have been running for eight years, honour teachers, administrators and creative thinkers from throughout the United Kingdom who are shaping the direction of learning.
Rachel Rees, headteacher at Westbourne School, expressed her pleasure at receiving this honour from the Edufuturist Awards, stating that it acknowledges the commitment of the teaching team, the drive of the pupils and the conviction that schooling must constantly adapt to serve the requirements of the world young people will inhabit.
She noted that it has consistently been the school’s view that institutions need to progress beyond merely transferring information and instead cultivate young people capable of analytical reasoning, tackling involved challenges and succeeding alongside swiftly developing artificial intelligence.
Westbourne’s educational approach centres on maintaining high academic standards combined with pioneering methods of delivery.
The institution incorporates AI throughout all subject areas, with particular focus on independent thought, self-reliance and the capacity to adjust to new circumstances.
Recent national acknowledgement includes reaching the final stage of the Pearson National Teaching Awards in the category for Transformational Application of Digital Technology, which drew attention to its initiatives in artificial intelligence, robotics, computer programming and worldwide connected classrooms.
In 2025, Westbourne additionally claimed the Independent School of the Year Award for Most Effective Utilisation of Educational Technology.
AI forms a core part of the school’s ethos, extending beyond merely a topic or device to represent a wider drive to quicken learning and enhance comprehension.
