Contractors launch £1,500 GoFundMe as Blaenavon woodland fire continues to rage

Local tradespeople and agricultural workers have called for increased assistance as they join emergency responders in battling the continuing Cwmavon woodland blaze close to Blaenavon.

Local people report that conditions have deteriorated over recent days, with dense smoke still impacting communities throughout the Gwent area. Concerns have been voiced about the effects on youngsters, elderly individuals and those with breathing difficulties, as well as the fire’s nearness to agricultural holdings and countryside properties.

One local resident, Angela Trett, described the community’s reaction as remarkable but cautioned that people could only do so much without additional backing.

She stated that these tradespeople and farmers were funding the operation themselves, using their own machinery, fuel and paying their employees from their own resources.

She explained that most were self-employed and were losing income because they were not carrying out their regular work.

Ms Trett noted that residents had been dealing with smoke for several weeks, with shifting winds carrying haze from Blaenavon and Abergavenny in the direction of Pontypool, Cwmbran and Newport.

She added that this particular blaze was the most severe the region had experienced, describing the terrain as extremely parched and cautioning that it had become highly flammable.

Harri Groves, who runs Tarian Property Maintenance in Pontypool, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with meeting the expenses of equipment, hired machinery and fuel for those supporting the firefighting operation.

The fundraising effort had accumulated £960 against a goal of £1,500 when last checked, with 35 contributions logged. The appeal stated that expenses were mounting as the fire persisted. It sought contributions for vehicles, hired equipment, fuel and other supplies used to help safeguard the woodland and nearby countryside.

Mr Groves noted that tradespeople and their employees had been present at the location since the previous night, assisting with creating firebreaks and offering hands-on help.

He emphasised that he was not profiting from this effort. He was underpaying his workers and losing business, but believed the work was essential and needed to be done.

He explained that local firms and tradespeople were deploying their own machinery, fuel, time and workforce while putting their usual work on hold to help.

The Cwmavon fire is among several wildfires impacting Gwent and South Wales during unusually dry conditions. Firefighters have previously cautioned that smoke can drift considerable distances and alter direction swiftly with wind changes.

Local people have also come together to support those working at the scene. Neighbours have been gathering food and water for firefighters and people impacted by the fires, while the GoFundMe initiative aims to address the fundamental costs of machinery and firebreak operations.

Those experiencing smoke-related issues are advised to keep windows and doors shut where feasible, steer clear of strenuous outdoor activity and obtain medical guidance if breathing difficulties continue or escalate.
