Ant and Dec hosted celebrity golf at Newport’s Celtic Manor 20 years ago

Two decades prior, the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport transformed into a glamorous gathering place when it staged the Northern Rock All Star Cup, drawing large crowds eager to glimpse famous faces.

The competition, which took place on August 28, 2006, showcased an impressive roster of celebrities.

Hollywood performer William Baldwin, model Jodie Kidd, broadcaster Chris Evans, and music star Meat Loaf were among those who attended, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a film premiere.

European captain Colin Montgomerie discovered that navigating celebrity interactions proved more demanding than the sport itself.

He reportedly remarked that he was uncertain whether to address his fellow competitor as Meat or Mr Loaf.

Actress Jane Seymour, originally from Britain but now holding American citizenship, represented the United States side.

She stated that at that moment she felt entirely American and intended to remain so until her team secured victory.

By the conclusion of the opening day, Europe had established a commanding advantage, accumulating 55.5 points compared to the American team’s 34.5.

Comedy veteran Bruce Forsyth delivered a particularly strong showing throughout the event.

Former Dutch international footballer Ruud Gullit and Kidd combined forces effectively, accumulating 13 points between them.

Meanwhile, their counterparts Seymour and Desperate Housewives star Richard Burgi could only manage five points.

The competition was presented by television presenters Ant and Dec, with coverage aired on ITV1.

Among the spectators were Jane Turner from New Inn in Pontypool, accompanied by her husband Barry and their companion Emrys Smith from Goytre.

Turner explained that her existing interest in golf, combined with the entertaining television coverage, had motivated their decision to attend the event in person.
