A government-supported employment initiative has seen its first participants begin work in Wales, with placements confirmed across multiple local authority areas.

The UK Government’s Jobs Guarantee programme, which opened this summer, targets young people aged between 18 and 24 who have experienced prolonged unemployment.

Eligible participants must have been receiving Universal Credit and actively job hunting for a minimum of 18 months.

The initiative provides a structured route into the labour market, pairing jobseekers with positions aligned to their existing abilities.

Under the scheme, up to 25 hours of paid work weekly receives full funding for a six-month period.

The Cabinet minister responsible for work and pensions confirmed that the programme addresses a longstanding barrier facing many young people seeking to establish themselves professionally.

According to the minister, the inaugural Welsh participants demonstrate the scheme’s core purpose: delivering genuine employment, fair compensation, and sustainable career pathways.

Initial placements have commenced throughout Wales, covering Cardiff, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil, Bridgend, Swansea, Caerphilly, and Rhondda Cynon Taf.

The Wales secretary described the launch as an affirmation of the government’s belief in young people’s potential, noting that the programme creates a crucial initial opportunity for professional development while enabling participants to gain experience and transferable abilities.

The programme targets 3,500 young people in Wales over the coming three years, with a national objective of establishing more than 90,000 subsidised positions by 2029.

Major employers such as Boots have committed to providing opportunities in retail, office, and logistics settings.

The managing director of Boots UK and Ireland stated that the company welcomes the chance to offer young people work experience across its stores, corporate sites, and distribution centres through this initiative.

The programme forms part of a broader £2.5 billion government investment in youth employment.
