A drinking establishment hidden in an unexpected spot in Newport has earned this week’s ‘Pub of the Week’ accolade.

The Dragonfly, situated on Lakeside Drive just off the A48, belongs to the Vintage Inns chain and has built a loyal following thanks to its freshly prepared cuisine, welcoming environment for families and meticulously cared-for outdoor area.

Hidden near the Porsche showroom, the venue might not be immediately obvious from the main road, yet when reporters called in at approximately 3pm on a Thursday, it was already filling up nicely.

The exterior grounds were spotless, with ample seating available outside and a garden that manager Ben Davies tends to largely on his own.

Davies explained that he uses a 200-metre hose for maintenance, naturally, whenever water restrictions are not in force.

He noted that this explains why the garden currently appears somewhat worse for wear.

Despite his own assessment, the outdoor space was evidently well looked after.

Inside, the establishment proves equally appealing, with decorative pieces adorning the walls and carefully considered details throughout the interior.

Davies mentioned that tradespeople make up a significant portion of the weekday clientele.

He suggested this is likely due to the hotel located opposite.

These visitors tend to arrive mid-week and frequent the establishment before beginning their work commitments on Friday.

The venue’s primary customer base at weekends consists of families, with the pub welcoming additional children and canine companions.

Four-legged regulars are particularly embraced at The Dragonfly, with many ramblers treating the pub as their final destination.

Davies observed that dog walkers form a substantial part of the crowd.

He noted that patrons typically begin their walks from the car park and make their way back here afterward.

He said the staff have a fondness for their animal visitors.

The venue underwent a complete renovation and welcomed customers again in September 2025.

Davies, who has spent ten years with Vintage Inns, expressed amazement at the results of the transformation.

He admitted being taken aback by how attractive the space looked following the renovation.

The establishment now hosts various events, including nuptials.

Birthday gatherings, corporate occasions and memorial receptions also take place there.

The venue provides buffet catering with numerous selections available.

The food offering plays a central role in The Dragonfly’s appeal, with Davies characterizing the fare as substantial, traditional pub cuisine.

His own preferred option is the rib-eye steak, though he remarked that patrons cannot go wrong with the fish and chips.

He stressed that everything is prepared from scratch on the premises.

He added that guests are treated like relatives and the team ensures the level of service reflects this ethos.

A set menu featuring three courses is priced at £24.95, available Monday through Friday, offering patrons a choice from various dishes.

At weekends, a more elaborate three-course selection costs £32.50, featuring dishes such as steak accompanied by scallops.

Behind the bar, Peroni and Madri rank among the popular tap choices, while Tiny Rebel, produced in the nearby area, can also be found on draft.

When asked about the venue’s appeal, Davies offered a straightforward response.

He simply suggested that visitors come and try it for themselves, asserting that they would understand what makes the place special.
