A family-owned jewellery business in the city centre has announced it will shut its doors this morning (August 22), blaming repeated criminal activity in the area.

Xclusive Jewellers has occupied its city centre location for almost four decades, originally launching in the busy indoor market before moving to its present High Street premises.

Owner Annette Farmer’s establishment has recently suffered at the hands of criminals, with £8,000 worth of jewellery taken during a break-in on June 30.

They had also experienced another intrusion earlier that same month, when Ms Farmer informed the South Wales Argus that the window was kicked and struck with a barbecue fork and wooden plank while a group grabbed what they could.

The business has now fallen prey to another break-in, according to a statement published on their social media channels.

According to the statement, the intruder climbed over 20 feet up the building, smashed an upstairs window to gain entry, and used a crowbar to force through internal doors.

The owners have stated that because their premises are over 200 years old, the incident means the location is no longer safe or viable for employees to keep working from.

They stated that after almost 40 years of business, it breaks their heart to make this decision, but safety must come first. As a result, they will be closing their Newport High Street shop location.

Ms Farmer had cautioned earlier in the summer that without improvements to the city centre, she would have no choice but to shut her business and that people were leaving the city because they do not feel safe.

Although their High Street shop is shutting, Xclusive Jewellers has let customers know they will maintain their jewellery and watch repair operations through a pickup and delivery service, beginning September 1.

The business finished their announcement by thanking customers for their incredible support and loyalty over the last nearly four decades, stating that they truly appreciate their understanding during this transitional time and look forward to continuing to care for their cherished jewellery and watches.
