Newport City Council has given the green light to plans that will transform the upper levels of a High Street property into a creative arts centre and studio complex.

The project, situated above LePub at 14-15 High Street, involves converting the first floor into a bookable arts space, while the second and third levels will become co-working areas and private studios.

The proposal also encompasses a partial rear extension to accommodate a new staircase, internal modifications to expand the arts space, and the creation of a rooftop terrace.

The extension will be constructed using standing seam metal cladding and will measure 4.7 metres in depth, 3.5 metres in width, and 3.3 metres in height.

The rooftop terrace will include bifold doors, a 2.5-metre acoustic barrier, and a modular living wall.

The council has imposed conditions to safeguard the property’s character, specifying cast metal rainwater fixtures on the main facade and requiring DOFF or TORC cleaning techniques to protect the brickwork.

These stipulations aim to preserve the building’s contribution to the surrounding conservation area.

All construction must proceed according to the approved drawings, and before any cast metal rainwater replacements are installed on the main elevation, specifications must be presented to and authorised by the Local Planning Authority in writing; work may only commence once details have been agreed and must remain in place throughout the duration of the use.
