A blaze that erupted on a hillside has been contained, Caerphilly County Borough Council has stated.

Crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene in New Tredegar on August 19.

The flames were contained and then fully put out.

A council spokesperson stated that they had been monitoring the situation and were ready to offer assistance if needed. The flames were contained and fully extinguished by firefighters on Tuesday evening.

Fire crews had been standing by to assist with the emergency if necessary.

Dense smoke and fire were spotted on the slope behind Graig y Bedw, with locals expressing worry about nearby properties and animals. Onlookers noted that smoke was spreading rapidly over the high ground, with dark plumes visible from the town. One resident described a significant amount of smoke moving across the mountain, with visible flames. The resident added that it is very sad for all the wildlife and it is extremely close to people’s houses. The resident also noted that the firefighters have had to deal with so many of these blazes over the past fortnight. Another individual expressed concern that the fire might be near where their horse is stabled, stating that their heart was pounding when they saw it.

The fire service is urging people to stay away from incident locations, keep windows and doors shut if affected by smoke, and report any suspicious activity or deliberate fire-setting to police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Only dial 999 if there is a new emergency requiring an immediate fire service response.
