Rail services are facing significant disruption this morning following a locomotive failure on August 20.

The breakdown is impacting journeys on the line connecting Newport with Ebbw Vale Town, with travellers experiencing delays of as much as 50 minutes and certain services being withdrawn entirely.

Technical specialists are presently tackling the fault, and officials anticipate the disruption will persist until 11.30am.

Additional bus provision has been arranged to assist passengers in reaching their destinations.

Travelers holding rail tickets are also being permitted to use Stagecoach services.

The following substitute bus routes are in operation:

Stagecoach South Wales Route 56 runs between Newport and Crosskeys, serving Rogerstone and Pontymister along the way.

Stagecoach South Wales Route X15 operates between Newport and Llanhilleth, stopping at Rogerstone, Crosskeys and Newbridge.

Stagecoach South Wales Route 151 travels from Newport to Newbridge, calling at Pye Corner, Rogerstone, Pontymister, Risca and Crosskeys.

Stagecoach Route 21 connects Newport with Ebbw Vale.

Newport Bus Route 1 runs between Newport and Rogerstone, via Pye Corner.

Transport for Wales has cautioned that surface transport will require more time than the railway, urging passengers to allocate additional journey time.

A Transport for Wales representative explained that a locomotive became immobile between Newport and Ebbw Vale, which means services across the region are encountering difficulties and could be either cancelled or delayed. The maintenance division is communicating with on-board staff as they work to resolve the issue. Services are being withdrawn in both directions between Newport (South Wales) (NWP) and Ebbw Vale Parkway (EBV). The fault is anticipated to persist until 09:31, with service disruption expected to continue until 11:30.
