Multiple households were forced to leave a holiday campsite after a significant fire flared up again on the afternoon of August 17.

This development follows detailed accounts from the camping enterprise located adjacent to where the flames originated.

The fire ignited close to Morfa Bychan in Pendine on the evening of Sunday, August 16, at approximately 8.20pm.

Carly Harris, who is 49, and her husband Gavin, operators of Thorning Farm Glamping and Camping, stated they learned of the blaze at around 8.30pm and contacted the fire service, who had already been dispatched.

Some guests chose to dismantle their equipment and depart on Sunday evening, though the majority opted to remain.

Ms Harris mentioned that the flames began at approximately 8.30pm on August 16, they received notification, and rang the fire brigade.

They were already aware of the situation, and certain campers elected to pack up and leave.

We remained throughout the night monitoring the fire, and the firefighters and farmers laboured continuously until morning.

The fire, which had been contained, roared back to life on the afternoon of August 17 at approximately 3pm, and MAWW Fire and Rescue Service instructed Mr and Ms Harris to prepare for evacuation.

Ms Harris noted that the following day the fire had been extinguished by the afternoon of August 17, but at around 3pm it flared up again and the wind was somewhat changeable, so the fire brigade recommended preparing to evacuate, and everybody departed.

Some youngsters were distressed, they were reluctant to leave and felt scared of the flames.

However, everyone behaved sensibly and reassured us that we had made the correct choice.

MAWW Fire and Rescue Service informed Mr and Ms Harris that they could resume operations as normal today, August 18, and many of their visitors have now returned.

Ms Harris mentioned that some guests have returned today after staying in local hotels, simply seeking reassurance.

MAWW Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed that personnel continue to be present at the location today, August 18, and are focusing on cooling and watching smouldering areas throughout the impacted zones to minimise the chance of additional outbreaks.

According to Ms Harris, very little smoke is currently visible from the fire.

A section of the campsite is being utilised by the firefighters to access toilet facilities, and Mr and Ms Harris have also been providing food for them.

Ms Harris characterised the farmers who had been working relentlessly to assist the fire crews as true heroes.

She stated that the farmers were continually delivering tanker loads of water to the fire throughout the night, circulating repeatedly, supporting the fire brigade.

They are absolute legends, it’s an amazing community. I’m really proud of them.

Mr and Mrs Harris had chosen to prohibit fire pits at the campsite eight weeks prior, as they were on heightened alert because of blazes in the locality.

Nonetheless, Ms Harris noted that problems had persisted with wild campers igniting fires on the beach, which endangers not only their campsite but also the neighbouring residences.

On Sunday evening, shortly before the wildfire commenced, Ms Harris was informed by a campsite visitor that approximately 12 individuals were wild camping on the beach, with fires burning.

Ms Harris mentioned that Morfa Bychan is a brief walk along the coastal path from the campsite, and they have experienced difficulties with wild campers on the beach starting fires.

They have reported that fires are being lit down there, and the threat this poses to their enterprise and the surrounding houses.
