A celebration of South Asian culture took place in Monmouthshire, uniting local communities in a colourful demonstration of heritage, belonging, and togetherness.

The gathering occurred in Abergavenny on Saturday 8 August, with arrangements made jointly by Monmouthshire County Council and the Abergavenny Meghala Malayali Association.

As part of South Asian Heritage Month, the occasion sought to encourage comprehension, participation, and social bonds through entertainment, movement, cuisine, and cultural pastimes.

Councillor Angela Sandles, who serves as Monmouthshire County Council’s cabinet member responsible for equalities and community involvement, expressed that it was heartening to witness individuals spanning all generations uniting to celebrate, exchange knowledge, and appreciate the vibrant traditions that contribute to making Monmouthshire such an inviting place to reside.

She added that occasions of this nature reinforce community bonds, foster mutual understanding, and highlight the importance of honouring the varied backgrounds present throughout the county. She conveyed gratitude to those responsible for arranging the event and to every person who attended.

The visible passion, energy, and communal spirit throughout the afternoon proved genuinely uplifting.

Hosted at Abergavenny Community Centre, the programme included authentic cuisine, cultural exhibitions, and a diverse lineup of entertainment and participatory activities.

Visitors experienced classical and folk dancing, traditional musical performances, a demonstration of saree wrapping techniques, and engaging pursuits suitable for all age groups.

The day offered families, individuals, and local organisations a chance to connect, exchange narratives, and discover more about the cultural traditions that contribute to Monmouthshire’s multifaceted communities.

Among those present were Monmouthshire County Council leader Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby, council chair Councillor Tudor Thomas, and Councillor Sandles.

The council expressed appreciation to AMMA, the dedicated volunteers, performers, and everyone who played a part in ensuring the event’s success.

The authority restated its pledge to collaborate with local communities in developing initiatives that honour differences, support participation, and unite residents.

The gathering demonstrated the significance of social connections and how cultural expression and collective experiences can effectively bring people closer together.
