A fresh collection of stamps is honouring some of Britain’s most cherished creatures.

Royal Mail has released 10 commemorative stamps showcasing favourite household pets, among them a lionhead rabbit, goldfish, golden hamster, Hermann’s tortoise, budgerigar, fancy rat, golden retriever, tabby cat, cockatiel and crested cavy guinea pig.

Every stamp showcases the distinctive character and appeal of creatures that offer comfort and friendship to families nationwide.

Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy, David Gold, explained that pets occupy a significant position in numerous British homes and affections.

The new stamp series pays tribute to the animals providing comfort, happiness and companionship to millions throughout the United Kingdom, ranging from devoted dogs and self-reliant cats to vibrant birds, inquisitive small mammals, colourful fish and distinctive tortoises.

The postal service partnered with animal specialist Tamsin Pickeral, who has written The Invention of the Dog and The Beauty of the Cat: An Illustrated History.

According to Ms Pickeral, creatures of every kind play a vital role in people’s lives, primarily due to the considerable comfort and pleasure they provide, but also from a cultural perspective.
