Dense smoke and a smoky haze have been observed throughout Newport during the morning hours as emergency crews work to extinguish multiple blazes burning throughout the Gwent and South Wales regions.

The atmospheric conditions may be connected to persistent fires at locations such as Cwmavon Woods in the vicinity of Blaenavon, Wattsville Mountain, Rudry Common and zones close to Rhiwderin. Prevailing winds have shifted, carrying smoke from the Blaenavon fire toward Newport, Cwmbran, Pontypool and additional settlements in the area.

An online mapping resource displaying wildfire incidents throughout South Wales indicates active fire locations in the surroundings of Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Cwmbran, Newport, Cardiff and Barry.

The most significant recent incident involves a substantial moorland blaze situated near Llangynidr Reservoir, not far from Ebbw Vale, which has consumed approximately 400 hectares of terrain.
