A route through a Torfaen village is facing fresh closure just days after traffic resumed following a police probe.

Hospital Road in Pontnewynydd will be inaccessible on Sunday, August 16, after a vehicle collision left an electricity pole in need of repair.

The shutdown occurs less than seven days after the thoroughfare became passable again after detectives conducted extensive inquiries into the killing of 56-year-old Anthony Tony Jones, a resident of Brecon.

Torfaen Council has confirmed that emergency restrictions will prevent access to Hospital Road in Pontnewynydd on Sunday August 16, after a road traffic collision caused damage to an electricity pole.

The thoroughfare is anticipated to be blocked from 8am until the middle of the day while National Grid personnel carry out remedial work on the pole.

The most recent restriction follows the road reopening after authorities investigated accounts of violent disorder occurring on Thursday, August 6.

That occurrence resulted in Mr Jones’s death and saw the route sealed off for approximately a week while detectives conducted their work.

The prolonged restriction created significant difficulties for inhabitants of Pontnewynydd, Trevethin and Penygarn, with large numbers of people impacted.

The shutdown also overlapped with infrastructure work on the nearby Park Road, resulting in substantial congestion and detours through housing estates.

Hospital Road eventually became accessible once more on Tuesday, August 12.

Nevertheless, Torfaen Council had indicated that additional restrictions might be necessary for urgent utility work.

Now, just four days subsequently, the route will be sealed off again to enable National Grid technicians to securely mend the compromised pole.

Motorists are being urged to factor in additional travel time and to seek alternate paths where feasible.
