The South Wales Argus reported on August 14, 2006 that backers of Newport’s famous Transporter Bridge were seeking donations to fund a distinguished visitor’s trip for the structure’s centenary festivities.
The commemoration was scheduled for September 12 that year, with attendees anticipated from across the globe to mark the landmark’s 100-year milestone.
A notable omission was that of Didier Leinekugel Le Cocq, the great-grandson of Ferdinand Arnodin, the bridge’s original creator.
Mr Arnodin, who passed away in 1924, was a celebrated engineer responsible for the design of many transporter and suspension bridges worldwide.
At that time, Mr Leinekugel Le Cocq, who lived in Larche in central France, indicated his wish to be present for the celebrations with his spouse but explained that costs prevented him from making the trip.
In response, two supporters of the bridge launched an appeal to gather £1,000 to pay for the couple’s travel and lodging.
Councillor David Hando, a Friend of the Transporter Bridge and one of the event’s coordinators, stressed how essential it was to have the designer’s direct descendant at the gathering.
He stated that they were very keen for him to attend because visitors were travelling from everywhere to be present.
He noted that outstanding activities had been arranged for the centenary and that having a direct family link to the actual engineer who created the bridge would be the perfect finishing touch.
Anne Gatehouse, the organising committee’s acting secretary, pointed out that their charitable organisation was modest and had no spare money available.
She expressed hope that local companies and hotels would offer support, enabling Mr Leinekugel Le Cocq and his wife to participate in the event.
Mr Arnodin’s contribution was substantial, as he was responsible for more than 20 transporter and suspension bridges constructed throughout France.
In correspondence with the South Wales Argus at the time, Mr Leinekugel Le Cocq described his deep connection to bridges, noting he had been raised with a love for bridges and had always wished to continue his family’s profession.
At age 64, he served as the head of Ets Arnodin, a firm that constructed suspension bridges globally, a position previously occupied by his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He observed that transporter bridges rank among the most distinguished and celebrated engineering achievements because they represented highly innovative and bold designs for their era.
Mr Leinekugel Le Cocq voiced his pleasure that Newport’s Transporter Bridge had become a significant feature of the city.
His collection of bridge-related items comprised over 1,200 postcards depicting various bridge openings, though one item notably absent was a postcard from Newport when the bridge first opened in 1906.
The Newport Transporter Bridge, which began operation on September 12, 1906, was conceived to enable tall-sailed vessels to reach docks further upstream along the River Usk.
The bridge resulted from a partnership between RH Haynes, Newport’s Borough Engineers, and Mr Arnodin, who held international recognition as a pioneer in transporter bridge engineering.
Currently, the Newport Transporter Bridge remains one of just eight functioning transporter bridges in existence worldwide.
The other seven are located in Portugalete near Bilbao in Spain, which was the world’s first and began operating in 1893; Martrou in France; Osten, Hamburg in Germany; Middlesbrough in England; Rendsburg in Germany; Riachuelo in Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Warrington in England.
