Firefly Holidays, a British travel firm established in 2016, has ceased operations after a decade following a voluntary winding-up order approved on August 7.
The Abingdon-based company specialised in affordable packages to holiday villages, camping sites, ski resorts and similar destinations throughout France, Spain and Italy. Its mission statement described efforts to enable independent-minded travellers to access significantly better experiences at lower costs.
During its inaugural full trading year, the business earned recognition among the Sunday Times Best 100 Holidays and received nominations for two British Travel Awards after its second year of operation.
According to records published in The Gazette, Stephen Mark Powell from BTG Begbies Traynor was appointed as liquidator following the voluntary liquidation process. This move means the company will no longer arrange any further holidays.
A message posted on the company website stated that after ten years of trading, the business was no longer accepting reservations. The statement noted that it had been a genuine privilege to assist customers in enjoying outstanding holidays and award-winning experiences. The Firefly team indicated they were now embarking on their own travels to different locations. While no longer taking bookings, the company expressed willingness to assist existing customers and new enquirers with travel-related queries and guidance.
On social media, the business had been promoting holidays to destinations including Croatia, the Alps and Guadeloupe among other locations. The company’s LinkedIn profile explained that it was established by an experienced management team to provide the improved contemporary holiday experiences customers sought but larger established providers had not delivered. Despite launching amid Brexit uncertainty, declining exchange rates and European terror incidents, the company developed a loyal customer base, with 99 percent of surveyed clients indicating they would happily book again.
This closure comes amid several other British travel businesses shutting their doors this year, including Regen Central Ltd, Gold Crest Holidays, Asiara UK Ltd, Simply Florida Travel Ltd, Salamander Voyages, Trav Expert Ltd, Strachan Travel Ltd, Travel Bespoke Ltd, Groupia Ltd, Global Vision International, Ski Yodl and TS Travels Group.
Additionally, four British airlines have entered administration or liquidation during 2026: Ascend Airways and EcoJet Airlines entered liquidation, while Zenith Aviation Limited and European Cargo entered administration.
