A regulatory body has found that the Wales Office and the Ministry of Defence published inaccurate information regarding the nation’s defence expenditure figures.

During June, the Welsh Office shared on social media platform X that the Government would be boosting defence spending by £270bn, a figure initially mentioned in March by the then Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

According to BBC Wales, the source of this number came from the MoD rather than the Wales Office, which was under the leadership of the then Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens at that period.

The Wales Office operates as a component of the UK administration, manages the devolution framework and seeks to represent Welsh interests in Parliament.

In correspondence addressed to Conservative shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge, the interim chair of the UK Statistics Authority, Penny Young, stated that describing the £270bn figure as either an increase in defence spending across this Parliament’s term or as an additional £270bn was wrong and deceptive.

She clarified that the £270bn amount reflects the intended total defence expenditure throughout the present Parliament’s duration, spanning from 2025-26 to 2028-29.

The letter noted that the Wales Office acknowledged to the authority that the figure was an error and corrections were implemented promptly upon discovery.

Young further indicated that the Wales Office had examined its communications guidance on this subject and strengthened its quality control procedures for press statements to prevent such errors occurring again.

She noted that the MoD has implemented measures to guarantee that forthcoming publications employ accurate and uniform terminology when presenting defence spending data.

Conservative Shadow Wales Secretary Mims Davies MP expressed that during times of increasing global uncertainty, citizens are entitled to truthful and open information about the nation’s defence finances.

She stated that Labour ministers and civil servants within the Wales Office ought to communicate accurate information rather than presenting data in a manner that could potentially confuse the public.
